For my special subject investigation, I want to find out if the performing arts are implemented in nursery schools. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with children during the course which is why my subject is based around young children.
My mother works in Crosfield Nursery School, and so I will conducting some of my research there. I will conduct some of my research during our two weeks off in October, where I will go to the nursery and begin my investigation.
Throughout the whole year, the children learn songs which culminate at an end of year carnival, where by they sing some songs to their parents. They also have story time every day where the children will sit and listen to a story being read by a member of staff. This will hopefully get their imagination going and interest them in reading more books when they are older. I already know that the nursery has two role play areas, in which the children are able to dress up and play in. The school used to have a 'music week', however that has recently been disposed of, and I would like to find out why, as I believe that music is a very important part of growing up, as it can sometimes influence choices that you make. Yet they still have 'science week' where they invite the science museum in and the children complete a workshop with them. I don't think that one subject is important than the other, and so I don't see a reason why they got rid of music week. At the end of the school year, in July, the school partakes in the 'carnival', which is a day of 'fun for all the family' and the children take part in a parade, and they dance and sing songs to their parents.
I am going to be using the 'Development Matters' document to get an idea of what young children 'should know' at different stages in their early life.
I am have also created a short questionnaire for some of the parents to complete.

Abstract:
How are the performing arts implemented in the early
years curriculum?
This research article will be investigating how the
performing arts are implemented into the nursery education. This research will
contain recordings of observations from Crosfield Nursery School, including how
the children play in the role play area, listen during story time and respond
to the instruments in the music area. It will also show results of a survey
containing answers from the parents of the school, giving the results of how
many of them go to the theatre, how often, and how they feel about role play in
the nursery and how it may enhance their child’s learning. The ‘Develop
Matters’ document will be used as a way to gain knowledge of how the children
should be responding to the areas of performing within the nursery. All this
will be combined to give the answer to the question of; ‘How are the performing
arts implemented in the early years curriculum?’
Here is my a rough timeline for this project.
While beginning my research, I came across a book called; Inside Role-Play in Early Childhood Education. I feel this will benefit my research as it will give me further knowledge which I may not get without reading it. I have emailed my teacher asking if the library would be able to get the book, as it will benefit me and perhaps more people after me. Below I have print screened the beginning of my research log which contains this book. I have left the 'Results' block free as I have not been able to read through it yet and therefore have no results and comments on the book yet.
